In 1922 Nichols married Norah Denny at St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, after earlier sonnets addressed to Nancy Cunard. The wedding belonged to his postwar social life in the capital. Biographers later record a turbulent emotional life that this marriage did not settle for good.

Marriage coincided with his move into drama and fiction as poetry’s wartime market faded. Personal instability and attachment remain a background theme in the later lyrics gathered in Such Was My Singing.
