What happened
In 1922 Nichols published the drama Guilty Souls, one of four plays that reached the London stage. The turn to theatre came as his fame as a war poet cooled in England. Drama offered a public form after the trench lyric had lost fashion.
Literary impact
Playwriting stretched his rhetoric toward dialogue and moral conflict. It is part of the same postwar search for a large form that later consumed years in the unfinished Don Juan.
