Nichols chairs English at Tokyo Imperial University

Poet involved

What happened

From 1921 to 1924 Nichols served as chair of English at Tokyo Imperial University in Tokyo, Japan. He lectured energetically and worked on translation connected with the seventeenth-century dramatist Chikamatsu Monzaemon. The post took him far from London literary politics for several years.

Literary impact

The Tokyo years widened his sense of world theatre and delayed but did not end his struggle to find a postwar epic form. Distance from England also marked a break with the soldier-poet identity of 1917.
