Nichols writes from Austria and Germany to Henry Head

What happened
In 1933 and 1934 Nichols spent time in Austria and Germany and wrote long weekly letters to the neurologist Henry Head, who had treated him for shell shock. The letters give an eyewitness account of the rise of Hitler. They survive as part of the family archive used by later biographers.
Literary impact
The Head letters extend his war-damaged sensibility into the next European crisis. They show the same urgent, emotional prose voice that marks the Sassoon preface.
