What happened
In March 1930 a divorce was granted to Yolande Du Bois Cullen in Paris, ending the marriage celebrated two years earlier at Salem Methodist Episcopal Church in Harlem. After joining her husband in France in July 1928 she had returned to the United States; negotiations over the settlement involved W. E. B. Du Bois as they had involved him in the wedding. Cullen came back to New York the same year to a cooler reception for his recent verse.
Literary impact
The collapse of the Du Bois marriage ended Cullen’s role as the Renaissance’s model son-in-law and fed poems and fiction about failed unions, secrecy, and the cost of public respectability. It also freed him to write the Harlem social comedy of One Way to Heaven without that particular family allegiance.
