What happened
The Poetry Bookshop published Strange Meetings in London in 1917, in the middle of the war. The collection gathers some of Monro's most characteristic encounters between the ordinary and the uncanny. It remained one of the Bookshop's durable titles, later reprinted as demand held.
Literary impact
Strange Meetings concentrates Monro's gift for conversations that do not quite connect and for rooms charged with unspoken feeling. The title idea of a meeting that remains strange becomes a key to later pieces in which speech arrives too late or means more than the speaker intended.
