What happened
The Poetry Bookshop at 35 Devonshire Street, London, published Real Property on 14 March 1922. Monro divided the book to mark a split in his work and prefaced the first part with a note on a planned sequence that imagination had refused to complete. The volume gathers earth-poems and interior pieces from his postwar maturity.
Literary impact
Real Property is the fullest statement of Monro's claim on the ground under modern life, the field carried in the head beneath city pavement. The unfinished-sequence note also shows his method: themes arrive as obsessions, not as programmes, which suits the haunted plainness of the later lyrics.
