Monro's final illness with tuberculosis and alcoholism

What happened
In his last years Monro's long struggle with alcohol was compounded by tuberculosis, financial strain, and deepening pessimism. Alida nursed him while the Great Russell Street shop and his reputation both faltered. He died on 16 March 1932 at the Cliff Combe Nursing Home in Broadstairs, Kent, and was cremated at Golders Green on 19 March.
Literary impact
Illness and dependence stripped his last poems to bodily fact, sleepless interiors, and the approach of nothingness. The sickroom pieces make explicit the mortality that had always haunted his quieter domestic lyrics.
