Discovery of Streptokinase
What happened
In 1933, William S. Tillett and colleagues discovered streptokinase from beta-haemolytic streptococci. Unlike anticoagulants, streptokinase activates the fibrinolytic system to dissolve clots. It later became an important thrombolytic treatment for myocardial infarction and other clot-related emergencies.
Literary impact
The discovery of streptokinase in 1933 introduced a revolutionary concept in medicine that resonated with poetic themes of obstruction and release. Poets began to explore metaphors of healing and transformation, reflecting on the fragility of life and the human experience of recovery.
