The Rann of Kutch Earthquake Raises the Allah Bund

What happened

In 1819, a major earthquake struck the Rann of Kutch in western India. It killed many people and created a long uplifted ridge known as the Allah Bund, changing drainage and flooding patterns in the Indus delta region. The event visibly rearranged the boundary between salt desert, river, and sea.

Literary impact

Gujarati and Sindhi oral traditions preserved the Rann as a place of salt, migration, miracle, and danger. The earthquake gives poets a striking example of land itself behaving like a living force, raising new barriers and altering remembered routes.
