Cayley publishes On Aerial Navigation
What happened
George Cayley published his three-part paper On Aerial Navigation in Nicholson's Journal between 1809 and 1810. It explained lift, drag, propulsion, and stability with unusual clarity for its time. The paper gave later aviation pioneers a conceptual framework for fixed-wing flight.
Literary impact
Printed scientific essays such as Cayley's circulated through the same culture that fed Romantic poetry, public lectures, and popular mechanics. The language of ascent, air, and experiment gained new literal force as writers confronted machinery that might fulfil old metaphors.
