In 1917 German Gotha bombers attacked London and other British targets. These raids marked a major shift from Zeppelin attacks to fixed-wing strategic bombing. They demonstrated that civilians far from the front could be reached by aircraft.

The Gotha raids changed the literature of the home front, making the domestic city vulnerable from the air. Later poets would inherit this fear of the overhead engine, developed fully in the bombing literature of the Second World War.
