The Royal Air Force was formed in 1918 by merging the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service. It became the world's first independent air force. The institutional separation of air power signalled that aviation had become a major strategic domain.

The RAF gave Britain a new military identity and supplied later poets with symbols of duty, sacrifice, and mechanical courage. Its presence is central to the cultural background of Second World War poetry and memoir.
