What happened
Large wagon trains began travelling the Oregon Trail from Missouri to the Pacific Northwest in the 1840s. Migrants endured disease, river crossings, accidents and severe weather while entering Indigenous homelands. Their arrival strengthened United States control and placed growing pressure on Native communities.
Literary impact
Diaries and letters created an extensive literature of ordinary migration and survival. Walt Whitman's Pioneers! O Pioneers! celebrated westward movement, while later Indigenous literature challenged its erasure of inhabited lands.
