What happened
Gold discoveries in Canada's Klondike region drew tens of thousands of prospectors towards Dawson City in Yukon. Travellers crossed dangerous mountain passes and endured hunger, cold and disease, while relatively few became wealthy. The influx disrupted the lands and livelihoods of Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in people.
Literary impact
Robert W. Service transformed the Klondike into memorable popular verse filled with cold, greed and frontier death. Jack London's stories likewise drew on the rush, although Indigenous experiences were largely marginalised in settler literature.
