New Model Army leaders confronted regiments displaying Leveller symbols at Corkbush Field near Ware in Hertfordshire on 15 November 1647. Several soldiers were arrested and mutineer Richard Arnold was executed. The episode restored command discipline and curtailed immediate efforts to impose the Agreement of the People.

The mutiny demonstrated the limits placed upon radical speech even within the revolutionary army. Leveller pamphlets transformed suppression and martyrdom into arguments against political hierarchy and broken promises.
