On March 26, 1896, a methane and coal dust explosion at the Brunner Mine on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island killed 65 miners, nearly half the workforce. Poor ventilation contributed to the tragedy in this early coal operation. It led to inquiries and safety improvements in the region.
