Sheveluch Eruption
What happened
In 1854, Shiveluch (Sheveluch) in Kamchatka, Russia, had a major explosive eruption, one of its largest historical. Ash and pyroclastics affected the surrounding Klyuchevskoy group area. The andesitic stratovolcano continues frequent activity.
Literary impact
Exploratory and scientific literature of 19th-century Russia featured Kamchatka volcanoes, inspiring poetic descriptions of untamed frontiers.
