Brother Austin Marries Susan Gilbert
Poet involved
What happened
On July 1, 1856, Emily Dickinson's older brother, William Austin Dickinson, married Susan Huntington Gilbert, Emily's close childhood friend, in Amherst, Massachusetts. The couple moved into the Evergreens, a house built by Edward Dickinson next door to the Homestead.
Literary impact
Susan's proximity as a neighbor and sister-in-law made her Dickinson's most important literary confidante and the recipient of more poems and letters than anyone else. The intensity of their relationship, which some scholars interpret as romantic, fueled Dickinson's most emotionally charged and artistically daring work.
