Lawrence begins pupil-teaching in Eastwood
Poet involved
What happened
Following the death of his older brother Ernest, Lawrence attracts the full attention of his mother, who encourages him to become a pupil-teacher at the British School in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. That same year, he begins an intense intellectual and emotional relationship with Jessie Chambers of Haggs Farm.
Literary impact
This period marked the beginning of Lawrence's serious engagement with literature, as he and Jessie Chambers embarked on what she later called 'a kind of orgy of reading,' sharing and discussing books. His relationship with Jessie and the Chambers family provided the emotional and intellectual stimulation that launched his writing career and later inspired characters in Sons and Lovers.
