Lawrence studies at University College Nottingham
Poet involved
What happened
Lawrence takes up a teacher-training scholarship at University College Nottingham, studying from 1906 to 1908 and earning a teaching certificate. Though he dislikes student life, the experience inspires his poem 'From a College Window'.
Literary impact
His time at University College provided Lawrence with formal training and credentials that enabled his teaching career, but more importantly, it gave him space to write in earnest. The college environment and his dissatisfaction with institutional education would inform his critiques of modern schooling and his belief in instinctual, non-institutional learning.
