Death of Wilde's Mother, Jane Wilde

Poet involved

What happened

Wilde's mother, the poet and Irish nationalist Jane Francesca Elgee, died in London, England, while Wilde was imprisoned in Reading Gaol and was not permitted to attend her funeral. Her death added deeply to his grief and isolation during incarceration.

Literary impact

The compounded sorrow of his mother's death while confined intensified the meditations on loss, guilt, and suffering that shape 'De Profundis,' the long prison letter he composed in this period.
