What happened
Upon his release from Reading Gaol in England, Wilde immediately left for France, settling in exile and adopting the pseudonym Sebastian Melmoth. He would spend the remainder of his life on the Continent, largely in France, estranged from English society.
Literary impact
Exile stripped Wilde of his former celebrity and financial security, and the isolation and reflection of this period directly produced 'The Ballad of Reading Gaol,' his final major poetic work.
