Jones studies at Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College
Poet involved
What happened
Jones attended Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College, now Alcorn State University, in Mississippi. He studied there for fourteen months during 1902-1903. He exchanged labour for tuition, making education a hard-won personal achievement rather than a simple institutional path.
Literary impact
This period strengthened Jones's lifelong association of poetry with self-education, discipline, and aspiration. The struggle to obtain formal learning became central to the moral force of his later poems about dignity, freedom, and intellectual hunger.
