What happened
In the summer of 1910, Jones left Indianapolis, Indiana, and set out for Cambridge, Massachusetts. He travelled largely on foot and sometimes by freight train. His goal was to reach Harvard University and plead for the education he had long desired.
Literary impact
The journey became one of the defining episodes of Jones's poetic life. It turned education into a pilgrimage and gave his later autobiographical writing a dramatic structure of hope, hardship, exclusion, and spiritual persistence.
