What happened
While studying at Hughes Center High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, Dandridge worked by day as a porter at the local YMCA. The job helped support him and his mother, Ellen C. Dandridge. This early combination of labour, study, and family duty shaped his working-class outlook.
Literary impact
The experience grounded his later poetry in ordinary labour, perseverance, and the dignity of people usually kept outside elite literary life. It also helps explain the democratic sympathy and plain-spoken energy that run through his dialect and social poems.
