What happened
Robert Nathaniel Dett began his influential association with the Hampton Institute in Hampton, Virginia, a historically Black school where he would train the choir to new heights of musical excellence over nearly two decades. This appointment became the defining professional relationship of his career.
Literary impact
Hampton gave Dett the institutional platform to found the Hampton Choral Union and Musical Arts Society, through which he developed and premiered much of his choral output. His work there established him as the leading figure in bringing spirituals to the concert stage.
