What happened
In September 1913, Owen moves to Bordeaux, France, to take up a position teaching English at the Berlitz School of Languages. He later also works as a private tutor for a Catholic family, immersing himself in French language and culture.
Literary impact
Owen's time in France exposed him to French symbolist poetry, particularly the work of Paul Verlaine, and introduced him to the older poet Laurent Tailhade. The formal experimentation and emotional intensity of French verse encouraged Owen to move beyond his early Keatsian models and develop a more modern, elliptical style that would later define his war poetry.
