What happened
In 1893, May Sinclair published an essay on “The Ethical and Religious Import of Idealism”. The chronology records the work before her move to London, during a period when philosophical questions were becoming increasingly important to her intellectual life. It marks an early engagement with idealist thought.
Literary impact
Sinclair’s early examination of idealism’s ethical and religious implications anticipated the more sustained philosophical work that later appeared in A Defence of Idealism. The subject also helped establish the close relationship between philosophical enquiry and imaginative writing that characterised much of her mature career.
