What happened

In 1909–1910, May Sinclair published The Creators and contributed introductions to Charlotte Brontë’s Villette and The Professor. The chronology also records that she was seriously ill for three weeks in May and June 1909. The period therefore combined literary productivity with a significant interruption caused by illness.

Literary impact

The Creators and Sinclair’s Brontë introductions show her continuing development as both novelist and critic. Her serious illness in 1909 interrupted this work but did not prevent her from maintaining a remarkably varied literary career combining fiction, poetry, criticism, and philosophical interests.
