Słowacki travels through Italy, Greece, Egypt and the Holy Land
Poet involved
What happened
From 1836 to 1837, Słowacki travelled extensively through Italy, Greece, Egypt and the Holy Land. The journey took him far beyond the European centres where he had previously lived and worked. The places, landscapes and experiences encountered during these travels became sources of inspiration for many later works.
Literary impact
The journey greatly expanded the geographical and imaginative range of Słowacki's poetry. Encounters with Mediterranean, Egyptian and biblical landscapes contributed new historical, religious and exotic dimensions to his later writing.
