What happened
In 1839, Słowacki wrote "Balladyna", one of the best-known dramas of Polish Romanticism. The work was created during his continuing life abroad rather than after a settled return to Poland. Its completion added a major dramatic achievement to his growing body of poetry and drama.
Literary impact
"Balladyna" became one of Słowacki's most celebrated dramatic works. Its combination of Romantic imagination, folklore, violence and moral conflict helped establish the distinctive dramatic style for which he is remembered.
