Valéry moves permanently to Paris
Poet involved
What happened
Valéry left Montpellier and settled in Paris in 1894, initially living in a small room in the rue Gay-Lussac. He joined the city's literary and intellectual milieu while continuing his private studies and writing. Paris became his principal home for the remainder of his life.
Literary impact
The move placed Valéry at the centre of French literary life and brought him into sustained contact with writers, artists and intellectuals. At the same time, his solitary existence in Paris allowed him to develop the rigorous private intellectual practice that distinguished his mature work.
