Robert Nichols, son of the poet John Bowyer Buchanan Nichols, was educated at Winchester College in Hampshire, England, before going up to Oxford. The school belonged to the same public-school world that shaped many Georgian and First World War poets. His later verse often returns to English landscape, comradeship, and a high-minded sense of duty first rehearsed in that setting.
Literary impact
Winchester formed the literary and social manners of his early lyrics. The public-school code of honour and landscape feeling later colour both the pastoral Faun poems and the officer’s voice in The Assault and related war pieces.
