What happened

Nichols published Invocation: War Poems and Others in 1915 in Britain, his first collection and an early soldier-poet volume issued while he was still in uniform. The book placed him among the first wave of Georgian war writers associated with Rupert Brooke’s generation. It prepared the larger canvas of Ardours and Endurances two years later.

Literary impact

Invocation announced the patriotic and lyrical war manner that made his name before disillusion set in. Its reception encouraged the epic ambition of the 1917 collection and the public readings that followed.
