What happened
After Cambridge, Monro spent several years in Ireland as a land agent for a family friend, a posting associated with County Fermanagh and other rural work rather than a literary office. His first wife and infant son Nigel, born in Ireland in 1904, shared parts of this unsettled household. Dorothy disliked the posting, and by about 1906 the family had returned toward London and the English countryside.
Literary impact
The Irish years trained Monro in practical management and in the gap between romantic landscape and paid work on land. That tension later feeds poems about earth, property, and belonging, including the real-property sequence in which fields are owned in the mind as much as on a map.
