What happened
Elkin Mathews issued Monro's first book of verse, Poems, in London in 1906, while he was still moving between Ireland, England, and utopian publishing schemes. The volume marked his first public claim to be a poet rather than only a Cambridge versifier. It preceded the better-known Samurai Press period and the later Poetry Bookshop books.
Literary impact
The 1906 debut established Monro on the Edwardian poetry market and began the long argument, in his own mind and among reviewers, about whether his gift was lyric or closer to prose. Later self-doubt about metre has its root in this early exposure.
