Publication of Chronicle of a Pilgrimage
Poet involved
What happened
Monro published Chronicle of a Pilgrimage, a prose account of walking from Paris to Milan, in 1909. The book records roads, inns, and self-examination across France and into northern Italy rather than a conventional Grand Tour. It stands beside his verse as the chief document of his late-Edwardian wandering years.
Literary impact
The pilgrimage taught him to treat movement, fatigue, and landscape as spiritual evidence. The plain, observational prose of the walk feeds later poems that notice rooms, weather, and the earth under pavement with unusual closeness.
