What happened
The first number of The Poetry Review appeared in London in January 1912 from a cramped office near Lincoln's Inn. Monro edited twelve monthly issues that year, printing some sixty contributors as Georgian and modernist camps began to divide. The magazine was his first major London institution after returning from the Continent.
Literary impact
Editing the Review placed Monro at the switchboard of English poetry in 1912 and forced him to define sincerity, personality, and a verse free of stereotyped diction. The experience made him publisher and host as much as poet, a double role that shaped both his career and his later satires of clique professionalism.
