1855

Event dated 1 May 1855

United Kingdom Band of Hope Union is formed

What happened

In 1855, local Band of Hope groups were brought together in a national organisation, the United Kingdom Band of Hope Union. The movement expanded through churches, schools, and public meetings. It helped make temperance a mass educational campaign rather than a loose set of local efforts.

Literary impact

The Union spread a performative culture of songs, readings, and moral verses that many children encountered before canonical poetry. Its language of pledge, purity, and rescue influenced popular verse and the moral atmosphere around drink in Victorian literature.
