Russian Revolution of 1905
What happened
Widespread unrest including strikes, peasant uprisings, and military mutinies challenged Tsarist autocracy following Bloody Sunday massacre of peaceful protesters. Though ultimately suppressed, the revolution forced creation of Duma parliament and limited reforms, revealing deep social fractures between autocracy and diverse populations demanding political representation, land reform, and relief from oppressive taxation and conscription.
Literary impact
The 1905 Revolution profoundly influenced Russian literature, with Maxim Gorky's Mother depicting revolutionary awakening while Symbolist poets like Blok captured revolution's apocalyptic energy. Alexander Blok's poem The Twelve later drew on 1905 experiences, and the revolution's failure to achieve lasting change created literary themes of betrayed hope and cyclical violence that permeated pre-1917 Russian poetry and prose.
