The Westminster Confession of Faith is completed
What happened
The Westminster Assembly completed the Westminster Confession of Faith in the 1640s, with the text approved by the English Parliament in 1647. It set out Reformed doctrine for church and society. The confession became especially influential in Presbyterian traditions.
Literary impact
Its theological vocabulary shaped sermons, devotional writing and psalm culture in Britain and America. Poets working in Reformed communities inherited its severe but powerful language of providence, sin, covenant and grace.
