William Robert Grove invents the first fuel cell in London

What happened

In 1839, the Welsh physicist and lawyer William Robert Grove invented the first fuel cell during experiments at the London Institution in the City of London. Grove demonstrated that by combining hydrogen and oxygen at the surfaces of two platinum electrodes immersed in sulfuric acid, he could produce an electric current directly from chemical reactants without combustion. This device, created at the London Institution, was the first to generate electricity from the chemical energy of fuels and anticipated the hydrogen fuel cell technology developed over a century later.
