The Miraculous Preservation of the Codex Sinaiticus

What happened

German biblical scholar Constantine von Tischendorf was visiting the remote Saint Catherine's Monastery at the base of Mount Sinai, Egypt, when he noticed a basket of old parchment scraps destined to be burned in the monastery stove. Upon closer inspection, he realized the leaves were part of a 4th-century Greek manuscript containing the oldest complete copy of the New Testament. This narrow, accidental rescue saved a priceless archaeological and linguistic treasure from turning into literal ash.

Literary impact

The rescue of this ancient text fundamentally transformed biblical translation, textual criticism, and the historical understanding of early Christian poetry and hymns. It provided modern writers and poets with a pure, uncorrupted window into the linguistic styles, metrical rhythms, and metaphors of late antiquity.
