First Long-Distance Telegraph Message Is Sent

What happened

Samuel Morse sent the message What hath God wrought from the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., to Baltimore, Maryland. It demonstrated the first operational long-distance telegraph line in the United States. Electrical signals could now carry language across great distances almost instantly.

Literary impact

The telegraph changed prose rhythm, journalism and popular perceptions of time and distance. Its clipped language anticipated modern communications, while poets found new metaphors in wires, codes, electricity and disembodied voices.
