What happened
On 13 February 1866, O'Reilly was arrested at Island Bridge Barracks in Dublin, Ireland, after British authorities discovered his Fenian activities within the Tenth Hussars. He was court-martialled on 27 June 1866, the eve of his twenty-second birthday, and sentenced to death, later commuted to twenty years' penal servitude.
Literary impact
The arrest and death sentence marked the end of O'Reilly's youth and the beginning of his transformation from soldier to convict and martyr. The trauma of capture, trial, and the spectre of execution infused his later poetry with a profound sense of injustice and a deep empathy for the oppressed, themes that became central to his literary identity.
