Poet involved

What happened

After graduating from Oberlin Conservatory, Robert Nathaniel Dett took his first teaching post at Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. This position marked the start of his lifelong dual career as an educator and composer at historically Black institutions in the American South.

Literary impact

Dett's arrival at a Southern Black college immersed him directly in the communities whose musical traditions he would spend his career transforming into concert art. His work with student choirs here began the pedagogical practice he would later perfect at Hampton Institute.
