Monro separates from Dorothy and leaves for France

What happened
The marriage to Dorothy collapsed in 1908. After leaving Upper Ifold and settling money affairs in England, Monro rose early on 30 March 1908, said goodbye to his hosts and to Dorothy, and departed for France. The break ended the first household experiment and sent him back onto the roads of Europe as a solitary walker and writer.
Literary impact
Separation sharpened Monro's poems of failed companionship, threshold moments, and the wish to leave a room. Travel after the rupture also prepared Chronicle of a Pilgrimage, in which walking becomes a method of thinking rather than a holiday.
