What happened
In 1875 Robert Barclay patented the offset lithographic printing process, in which an inked image is transferred from a plate to a rubber blanket before being pressed onto paper. The method produced sharper, more consistent results than direct lithography and proved ideal for high-speed commercial printing. Offset lithography became the dominant technique for printing books, magazines, and poetry collections throughout the twentieth century.
Literary impact
The invention of offset lithography in 1875 improved color and image reproduction in illustrated poetry books. This innovation allowed poets like William Morris to create visually stunning works, merging art and literature in new and exciting ways, particularly in his 'The Earthly Paradise'.
