What happened
In November 1869, after an eight-month sea voyage aboard the whaler 'Gazelle' and then the 'Bombay', O'Reilly arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a free man. He immediately received his naturalization papers, becoming a citizen of the United States.
Literary impact
Arrival in America marked O'Reilly's rebirth as a free man and a citizen, a theme of liberation and new beginnings that permeates much of his later work. The experience of exile and asylum gave his poetry a transatlantic perspective, blending Irish nationalism with American ideals of freedom and opportunity.
